Dead by daylight gets a color mode after inspiring comments by one of its designers

Dead With Daylight’s has been very popular among players in the last few years. We had issues with the Switch port – giving it a 6/10 star rating – but this awesome multiplayer game still offers plenty of fun with friends. With over 25 million players signing up, Behavior Interactive has now revealed that a colourblind mode is on the way – although we wish it arrived in better conditions.

Access campaigners have been asking for this option for years, and this recent event is about the version 4.5.0 update. It hasn’t been live yet, but it will make a number of changes to the HUD, which fans have criticized for being difficult to read if you’re a colourblind.

Shortly afterwards, one of the designers of the Behavior Interactive game, Ethan “Almo” Larson, then caught on streams comments on the application:

It gets really brash just bragging about color mode all the time, we’ve heard it a million times, we know. Continuing on, until we bad about it is not going to change anything. If it is done it will be done when we do it, when we have time to do it, or if someone decides it is something that should be done – it should be done. You know. Yes, we know a lot of players want it, we know it’s not a small number. We get it.

Needless to say, this position is widely criticized. He drew attention from Steven Spohn, COO of Able Gamers and a celebrity in gambling accessibility debate, which led to a formal apology with Interactive Behavior. At the same time, they will be quick to name that colourblind mode was actually working as well commenting “While these are not the circumstances we would like to mention, we feel the timing is right.”

In this statement, Behavior Interactive also revealed that it would initially offer support for three different types of colourblindness, naming deuteranope (cannot see green light) tritanope (blue light) and protanope (red light). A release date for this update has not been confirmed yet, but it will be coming soon. All we know is that no be part of Version 4.5.0.

We are always happy to see new access options added to players. Among them in particular it supported colourblind players before the launch of Switch, and accessory maker Hori unveiled an access controller back in November. It’s nice to allow more options for disabled gamers to enter, but it’s really sad that the news had to come out in this fashion.
