Datto acquires BitDam in a bid to protect SMB MSP cyber threat

The tech developer who targets Datto MSP said Wednesday that he has acquired BitDam, an Israeli developer in cyber threat detection.

Tel Aviv, an Israel-based BitDam developer of Advanced Risk Protection, or ATP, a technology the company claims offers complete protection against malware, phishing, business email compromise attacks, account negotiation, and spam.

The company’s latest version, BitDam ATP +, was released earlier this month. BitDam claims that ATP + was built in and for the cloud, and detects all unknown threats, identifying threats at the first encounter, protecting business collaboration devices against advanced threats, and provides two-click integration with Microsoft 365, OneDrive, and Teams through the Azure Marketplace.

The price of the construction has not been announced.

BitDam’s build comes on the heels of Datto unveiling its ransomware detection technology as part of the Datto RMM, or remote monitoring and control, platform for MSPs.

The new acquisition by Datto, which held the IPO last year that gave it the “MSP” ticker symbol, follows a series of high-profile cyber attacks through MSP platforms that accelerate the mass base of MSPs have reached their clients.

These include a major breach of Orion’s SolarWinds MSP platform, which collapsed over the past two years into a targeted national state attack that allowed security breaches to allow access to sensitive networks governments including the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Department of Finance.

Prior to that, rival Datto ConnectWise was linked to several security breaches in 2019, starting with reports in April that the ConnectWise Control product used in the now infamous Wipro hack. MSPs using ConnectWise Control then screened their network in August, resulting in the co-ordination of 22 city websites in cities and towns across Texas.

Datto declined to provide further details about the purchase according to media time, except to say that Datto will address security and the acquisition Thursday during the company’s fiscal fourth financial analyst conference call.

However, the company emailed CRN a statement from Datto Director Tim Weller in which he addressed the importance of security for Datto.

“Security has always been at the heart of Datto’s offerings and we see it as our duty and responsibility to help MSPs and SMBs address the biggest security concerns they face today. BitDam’s addition is in line with Datto’s deep commitment to providing top-of-the-line, cyber-reinforcement capabilities for MSPs and SMBs, and aligns with our mission of map-making -a security road for MSPs to help them achieve cyber resilience, ”Weller said in the statement.
