Danny Shmulevich (Shmilo) Rom, one of the legends of Maccabi Haifa, passed away today (Monday) at the age of 80. President Yaakov Shachar Safed: “I was saddened to hear of Danny’s death. Danny was an exemplary athlete and especially as a football player, a striker for Maccabi Haifa, whom all the league defenses feared. In the history of our club, Danny has a place of honor, and so we will remember him forever. My condolences to the grieving family. Of blessed memory”.

Danny, one of the greatest players who has ever appeared in the Maccabi Haifa uniform, is considered a football legend in the history of the club and of Israeli football. Shmilo took with Maccabi the club’s first ever title, the state cup in 1962 (scored a hat-trick in the semi-final against the then champion, Hapoel Petah Tikva).

Shmilo has 324 appearances in the Maccabi Haifa uniform in the league and the cup, in which he scored 98 goals. In the league, Milo scored 78 goals and he stands together with Yaniv Katan in second place of all-time conquerors in the green uniform. One of the highlights of his career was at the 1970 World Cup, when he played the games against Uruguay and Italy.
