The Danish director says the nomination, as well as another for best international feature film, honors 19-year-old Ida.

Much of the film, which follows a group of teachers who agree to consume a small amount of alcohol each day in hopes of improving their quality of life, was filmed at Ida High School, with scenes set in the her classroom.

“All the praise and love that this film receives makes sense in a very special way, because it honors my daughter’s memory and with that I feel very grateful. , ”Vinterberg told Reuters after announcing the Oscar nominations.

“I’m sure [it] making her clap her hands somewhere. She really enjoyed this. ”

A goal for the best director is a recognition that is rarely given to filmmakers outside the U.S.

“I was really surprised by two nominations … we were hoping for the international feature section and I was very relieved and delighted when that came around. But the other name was out of the blue … I’m deceived, ”he said.

Vinterberg said the idea came around when he and co-writer Tobias Lindholm looked at the number of achievements in world history achieved by people who were drunk.

“We quickly realized that this socially acceptable alcohol that elevates people, makes people court and forces people to make big decisions, also kills people and destroying families. ”

“We wanted to make a film that explores the full spectrum of alcohol, but more importantly … we wanted to make a film that proves life about living rather than just being there. ”

The director, 51, said he initially thought he would not be able to finish the film after the death of his daughter but after talking to the psychiatrist and his family, they agreed to finish it. that he would cause him to rise in the morning.

“We agreed that she would be sad because this project had come to an end and we also agreed that making this film for her was the only thing that made sense. And I believe that he kept me in some way, I kept him away from his complaint, ”he said.

Vinterberg said he was waiting to hear how this year’s concert, which will be held on April 25, will be held.

“I hope there will be a concert for the Academy Awards, a show of some sort, whatever the event I will definitely be there. Of course. ”
