Culture: The deputy ombudsman attacks Ron Huldai’s decision

Deputy Attorney General Raz Nazri today (Sunday) responded to the decision of Tel Aviv Mayor and Chairman of the Israeli Party Ron Huldai to open the cultural events in his city in ten days for those who have been vaccinated with the second dose of the corona vaccine. In his announcement, which is also addressed to the Minister of Culture and Sports, Hili Trooper, Nizri clarifies that the decision to open cultural events is in the hands of the government and not in the hands of the heads of the Israeli authorities.

Nizri responded to Trooper’s letter, which sought to legally examine whether the heads of local authorities were allowed to open cultural events, writing that “the legal way to open cultural institutions to the public is through the repeal of the ban or the non-extension of government validity.” The ban on opening cultural institutions is part of the Corona regulations enacted in January 2020 as a temporary provision.

“It is understood that as long as the ban is in force, a local authority – large and respectable as it may be – is not allowed to do justice to itself and independently formulate rules for the return of the cultural industry to activity,” Nazri announced in his letter.

It will be recalled that Huldai had earlier announced that he intended to open, even if the Ministry of Health did not approve it. “I’m going to do it and the Ministry of Health will not be able to say no. Life in the State of Israel should be initiated. If I had sat and waited for the Ministry of Health, nothing would have happened,” Huldai said in an interview on Net B.
