Turkish oncologists, marking World Cancer Day, said national and international guidelines and resources recommend vaccination for cancer patients.
Professor Nuri Karadurmus of the University of Health Sciences told the Anadolu Group that all cancer patients, especially those undergoing any active treatment, should have no matter of classical chemotherapy, sedative therapy, radiotherapy, or immunotherapy , consider getting vaccinated.
Karadurmus said some cancer patients had not gone to their doctor’s control in this period for fear of being infected with the virus. He said patients who did not follow their chemotherapy treatment were associated with the hospitals at risk of relapse.
Noting that there is no specific information on the number of cancer patients infected with the COVID-19, Karadurmus said that observational studies showed that cancer patients were included in the group of patients with immunity.
Karadurmus said the impact of cancer patients infected with coronavirus depends on the person’s disease.
He said factors such as the prevalence of congenital cancer and the burden of the tumor, the viral burden to which the individual is exposed, age, harmful organ failure, and the use of immunosuppressive drugs are also important in such cases. .
Karadurmus said the virus can also alter the course of several treatments, such as cancer levels and the burden of the tumor in the cancer patients.
He said the course of the disease could be more severe, especially in hematologic cancers, as the immune system is directly suppressed.
Karadurmus confirmed that while vaccination is recommended two weeks before the start of classical chemotherapy to ensure an immune response against the vaccine, patients undergoing any type of treatment can receive the vaccine during treatment.
“Those receiving cell gas transmission treatment are a distinct group in this regard,” he said.
He said they should not block health centers as their controls and treatments are extremely important.
