London, United Kingdom:

Britain lowered the country’s virus alert level one level from the highest possible, saying a fall in cases had reduced the risk to the state-run National Health Service.

Since January, the country has been in the top 5, highlighting a “substantial risk of overcrowding of health care services” and the need for a “very tight” social distance.

It is now moving to level 4, showing a “high or rising spread” with a critical social pace.

UK chief medical officers and the English medical director of NHS England said they had agreed to the move because things have been “steadily declining” and the threat of the NHS “is getting over internally 21 days on decline ”.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said he is “very optimistic” that all coronavirus blockade will be lifted by June 21 as the rollout of the vaccine has led to a sharp drop in cases, hospitals and deaths.

The UK has given the first dose of coronavirus vaccine to more than 18 million people.

On Wednesday it reported 9,938 new cases and 442 deaths. Since the outbreak of the pandemic the country has recorded more than 4 million cases and more than 121,000 people have died.
