Covid-19: The UK records 23,275 new coronavirus cases, 1,200 deaths

A further 23,275 people in Britain have tested positive for Covid-19, bringing the total number of coronavirus cases in the country to 3,796,088, according to official figures released.

Meanwhile, Britain also reported a further 1,200 coronavirus-related deaths, bringing the country’s death toll to 105,571. These figures only include the deaths of people who died within 28 days of their first positive test.

The latest data come as Britain halts its efforts to speed up vaccine distribution, Xinhua news agency said on Saturday.

More than 8.3 million people in the country have received their first dose of coronavirus vaccine, according to the latest official figures. Britain aims to deliver the first dose to 15 million of the most vulnerable by mid-February and to all adults in the autumn.

Earlier on Saturday, a British expert warned that some restrictions would remain in place in the country until a worldwide coronavirus outbreak spreads.

“We are still going to live in some form of restrictions – travel restrictions, border controls – even when we get the vaccine, so it will be worldwide,” said Clare Wenham, associate professor global health policy at the London School of Economics, Sky News reported.

“It is vital to ensure that everyone in the world has at least the lowest levels of vaccines,” Wenham said.

“If we want to return to global trading and travel systems, we need to make sure that the global vaccine is up to date,” she said.

England is currently under the third national closure since the outbreak began. Similar preventative measures also apply in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
