COVID-19: More than 20.5 million years of life may have been lost due to COVID-19

More than 20.5 million years of life may have been lost due to COVID-19 worldwide, with an average of 16 years lost per death, according to a study published in Scientific Reports. Years of Lost Life (YLL) – the difference between a person’s age at death and their life expectancy – as a result of COVID-19 in severely affected countries can be two to nine times higher than YLL as caused by seasonal average flu.

Héctor Pifarré i Arolas, Mikko Mÿrskyla and colleagues estimated YLL due to COVID-19 using data on more than 1,279,866 deaths in 81 countries, as well as life expectancy data and projections for total COVID- deaths. 19 by country.

The authors estimate that in total, 20,507,518 years of life could be lost as a result of COVID-19 in the 81 countries included in this study – 16 years for each individual death. Of the total YLL, 44.9% appear to have occurred in people aged 55 to 75, 30.2% in people under 55, and 25% in those over 75. In countries where if sex-related death accounts were available, YLL was 44% higher in men than in women. Compared to other common causes of death worldwide, COVID-19-associated YLLs are two to nine times greater than seasonal flu-related YLLs, and between a quarter and a half times as high as possible YLLs. on heart condition.

The authors warn that the results need to be understood in the context of chronic pandemic disease: they give us a picture of the possible effects of COVID-19 on YLL from 6 January , 2021. Estimates of pre- or postoperative YLLs may be due to the difficulty of correctly recording COVID-19-related deaths.
