CONMEBOL is postponing World Cup qualifiers in March in South America

The governing body will not proceed with the fifth and sixth rounds of the competition due to worldwide travel restrictions.

CONMEBOL has confirmed that the two rounds of South American candidates registered in March will not go ahead.

The decision comes after several countries refused to release players for the upcoming international break due to the need for quarantine after their tours.

Obstacle games such as Argentina’s clash against Uruguay and Brazil therefore need to be scheduled for a later date.

What was said?

“The board of CONMEBOL has decided to block the double round of qualifying matches for Qatar 2022 scheduled for March,” the South American governing body said Saturday after a meeting the day before with FIFA authorities.

“The decision is due to the impossibility of South American players in a timely manner.

“FIFA will look at reorganizing the globe, in coordination with CONMEBOL and the member associations. Soon, various options to stage the games will be explored.”

Why were the certificates canceled?

The CONMEBOL March credentials were jeopardized by the refusal of major clubs in the Premier League, Bundesliga and La Liga to release their European-based stars to travel across the Atlantic.

Countries such as Argentina and Brazil are on the United Kingdom’s restricted travel list, which argues that travelers from the countries must complete a long period of isolation before they can circulate.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and Manchester City ‘s Pep Guardiola both spoke out against the credentials, with the latter telling reporters: “If key players – maybe six, seven, eight or nine – can’t play for 10 days, it doesn’t make any sense. They’re not going to fly. “

The story so far

Brazil is currently leading the qualifying campaign after recording four winners in so many games so far.

Argentina is in second place with 10 points, followed by Ecuador, Paraguay and Uruguay.
