Chromebook ships almost round in Q4 2020 with over 11 million units: Canalys

Q4 2020 quadruple Chromebook sales were almost flat, with shipments reaching 11.2 million units, according to a Canalys report. This is an increase of 287 per cent over Q4 2019 figures, and will bring the full year total to 30.6 million units. The locks caused by coronavirus have led to an increase in demand for Chromebooks, possibly for remote education applications. With 3.5 million units delivered in Q4, HP maintained a leading position in the market. Lenovo had the highest numbers with 2.8 million units and a staggering growth of 1766 percent.

The research by Canalys revealed the numbers of Chromebooks in Q4 2020. The total Chromebook market was almost quadrangular in size compared to the same period a year ago. Demand for Chromebooks has been ‘through the roof’, according to Canalys Research Director Rushabh Doshi.

With HP and Lenovo taking the first two looks, Acer and Dell took the next two positions with 1.5 million units each. Samsung took over Asus and took fifth place with more than a million units; 630 percent more than a year ago, according to the analysis.

The global pandemic had forced countries to accelerate their digital education plans, the report by Canalys said, leading to those numbers. Further, Chromebook demand for education is expected to remain strong through 2021. In addition to education, the report revealed that there has been growing interest from consumers and traditional commercial buyers for Chromebooks.

At the global PC market (including tablets), meanwhile, shipments in Q4 2021 hit 143.7 million units. Total shipments for 2020 grew 17 percent to reach 458.2 units, leaving it at its highest level since 2015. Lenovo emerged as the top spot in Q4 and for the full year, with shipments of 28.8 million and 87.0 million individual units.
