Sales of Google Chromebooks have doubled over the past year. This may be largely due to the increase in people working and learning from home through the Coronavirus pandemic. It is reported that Google Chromebooks have turned into a popular choice for people who want to buy a new portable system.
Report by Canalys states that Chromebook shipments increased from 14.7 million laptops to 30.7 million laptops in 2020. In Q4 2020, HP installed 3.5 million of those devices, and 2.8 million were shipped with Lenovo. Dell and Acer, branded laptops, shipped about 1.5 million Chromebooks. In October, the market for Chromebooks went up nearly four times compared to the same time last year in 2019.
“With many countries forced to accelerate their digital education plans following additional locks, schools and universities are shouting for easy-to-use solutions and Google’s digital offering for education is a popular platform competitive, especially in the US and Western Europe, ”said Canalys Research Director Rushabh Doshi.
“Outside of education, traditional commercial consumers and consumers have been very interested in looking for Chromebooks to ensure an accessible continuity in business or personal computing,” he said.
Chrome OS still has a tiny user base compared to Windows, macOS
Despite the high sales, Chrome OS devices still make up less than 2 percent compared to other laptops. As per another report by Pocket lint, Chrome OS running systems ranged from 5.5 percent to 6.5 percent, which is significantly less than Windows-based systems (63 percent) and macOS-based systems (28 percent).
