Chris Gayle could be on the line to play his first international game since 2019
Opener Chris Gayle is expected to play his first game for the West Indies in two years after he and former fast bowler Fidel Edwards were recalled for the a series of three T20 home games against Sri Lanka next week.
The former captain Gayle last played for the West Indies in a one-day international against India in 2019 in what the 41-year-old then described as the international version of his end.
The swashbuckling baton has kept himself busy in Twenty20 leagues around the world and has played two games for Quetta Gladiator in Pakistan’s ongoing Super League before returning to Antigua.
“Chris Gayle has performed well in recent competitions and the selection panel believes he can still add significant value to our team,” Chief Elector Roger Harper said in a statement.
Fast player Edwards, 39, has been recalled for his first game for the West Indies in more than eight years.
Fidel Edwards has not played for the West Indies since Trial against Bangladesh in 2012
Antigua’s Coolidge Cricket Ground will feature its first international tour hosting all three T20 matches between March 3 and 7.
The teams will play three one-day trials and two trials later in the series.
Test captain Jason Holders was introduced to both white ball teams, but Andre Russell was left out altogether as he recovered from a COVID-19 catch this month.
