China’s box offices rose 545 million Yuan ($ 83 million) on New Year’s Day, the highest level for the day since records began in 2011, according to ticketing platform Maoyan Entertainment.

Local Chinese films contributed greatly to Friday’s figure, directed by “A Little Red Flower,” a story about two families battling cancer, and the romantic comedy “Warm Hug. ”

The rise in ticket sales is adding to signs that the world’s largest film market is kicking back after falling by about two-thirds last year amid six-month closures of cinemas to counteract the crown-virus.

Total box office revenue for China for 2020 was $ 2.8 billion, down from the high of $ 9.1 billion in 2019. However, the reduced figure was higher than the $ 2.1 billion recorded in the USA for 2020, according to data from Maoyan and Mojo Box market maker.

Tight travel loops, massive testing and increased sentimentality have revived the world’s second-largest economy, but the disease is still spreading in the U.S. and Europe.
