China is threatening to block the U.S. after the Trump administration listed 59 other Chinese companies.
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce said Saturday that the U.S. had misused export control measures to suppress Chinese companies. China will take the necessary steps to firmly protect the rights and legitimate interests of Chinese companies, a ministry spokesman said.
“We reiterate our urge on the part of the United States to stop unilateralism and bullying, to treat companies from all countries, including Chinese companies, fairly,” the spokesman said.
On Friday, the U.S. Department of Commerce added the 59 Chinese companies to their trade blacklist for their alleged connection to the country’s military, human rights abuses and theft of U.S. trade secrets.
China’s largest SMIC chipmaker (Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation) and related entities were included in the list based on evidence of activity between the companies and China’s arms industry center, the Commerce Department said.
“We will not allow advanced U.S. technology to help build an increasingly strong hostility of hostility,” Trade Secretary Wilbur Ross said. “Between SMIC’s relationship to the complexity of the military industry, China’s enforcement of civilian military dissolution orders and state-led subsidies, SMIC perfectly reflects the risks involved. China in U.S. technology to support arms modernization. ”
Adding SMIC to the sector’s list of entities limits the company’s ability to acquire U.S. technology by insisting that U.S. exporters must apply for a license to sell to the company. Chinese company. Equipment used to make semiconductor chips at 10 nanometers and below will be banned from export to prevent the technology from supporting Chinese arms construction.
DJI China, the world’s largest drone maker, was also added to the list. The Commerce Department said the Shenzhen-based company had enabled a high-tech investigation used for human rights abuses in China.
In Friday’s stock exchange filing, SMIC “strongly opposed its inclusion in the list, saying it had” never engaged in any activity related to arms claims from it was brought in. ”
While the U.S. ban will not adversely affect the company’s short-term operations, it will “adversely affect R&D and capacity building of 10 nanometers and under advanced technology nodes.”
