CBS: 31% decrease in job vacancies in 2020 – general

The vacancy rate decreased by 31% in 2020 compared to 2019, according to an update currently published by the CBS. According to the data, in December 2020 there were about 60.24 thousand vacancies (compared with 59.61 in November). The vacancy rate for December is 2.56% (compared to 2.53% in November).

In an annual summary, the months of January and February were further characterized by stability in demand for labor in the economy. During these two months, there were approximately 100,000 vacancies in the economy. However, following the outbreak of the corona virus in March, from March to May, there was a slump in demand for work. After that, starting in June, the number of vacancies stabilized at between 50,000 and 60,000.

There was great variation between the industries of the economy. In the hospitality and food industries (hotels and restaurants) and in the entertainment and leisure industries, jobs fell by close to 50%, while in the health and nursing and construction industries the decline was more moderate.

The vacancy rate in small businesses (up to 100 employees) decreased by 40%, compared with a 29% decrease in large businesses employing more than 250 jobs.

There were also differences between the districts in the country when the sharp decline, of 38% was recorded in the northern district. The decline in demand for work in the Southern District is the lowest, at 22%.

In an international comparison, Israel ranks in the middle. While in Italy the percentage of job vacancies decreased by 40%, in the United Kingdom it decreased by 37% and Israel as stated with a 31% decrease, while in the USA and Belgium there was a much more moderate decrease of 9% in demand in each of them.
