CAS General Chemistry now provides authoritative data on nearly 500,000 substances

CAS, a division of the American Chemical Society (ACS) that specializes in scientific information solutions, has expanded the CAS General Chemistry facility. To strengthen the accuracy of publicly available scientific information, CAS General Chemistry now provides authoritative information on nearly 500,000 materials from CAS REGISTRATION®. The collection represents products typically found in consumer products, on regulatory lists and as part of introductory chemistry curricula.

As part of ACS, CAS is committed to providing accurate chemical information to the global community. In parallel with the ACS Open Science initiative, CAS General Chemistry is expanding reach for all those who seek reliable scientific information about chemicals they regularly encounter. Enhanced search capability and an application programming interface (API) enable interested people to quickly find chemical names, CAS Registration Numbers®, basic structures or buildings.

“We saw a unique opportunity to promote access to open, accurate chemical information to promote learning and promote safety. By expanding access to information treated by our scientists, we can promote safe practices with interesting chemicals, “said Tim Wahlberg, chief product officer at CAS.

For over a century, CAS has collected, preserved and studied the world’s published science to drive innovation. CAS REGISTRATION is the world’s most trusted collection of chemical information. The universally recognized CAS Registration Number provides a unique identifier for chemical products and is commonly found on the packaging of household chemicals, as well as research publications, chemical catalogs, material registers and systems. governance.

Originally launched in 2009, CAS Common Chemistry provided the public with access to several thousand related products and data. Since then the number of sites has grown to over a million visits per year. In collaboration with thought leaders in the open chemistry and science community, CAS scientists greatly expanded the community resource with a targeted subset of materials from CAS CLÀR. Developed for mobile devices, CAS Common Chemistry now extracts accurate chemical information from anywhere.

Martin Walker, Ph.D., chair of the chemistry department at New York State University at Potsdam, was one of the colleagues involved in the project.

It is important that the public have access to information about chemicals they are exposed to, either at home or in the environment. The CAS Registration Number plays a key role in accessing that information, and CAS remains the gold standard. I am thrilled to see the collection expand to nearly half a million partnerships, providing a prime reliable source for chemical information. “

In addition to the expansion of imported materials, enhanced capabilities will meet changing demands for information. Newly added API capabilities support the growing needs of digital workflows and cheminformatics initiatives with direct viewing capability.
