Spy ICE: Electric parking bays will detect ‘smart’ when petrol or diesel cars stop in them and fine £ 70
- Each luxury bay has a sensor that detects that a car is parked
- This can be overridden by building a port function to detect abuse
- For now, the sensors are only being used to collect data on the cost of bay use
- However, Coventry council is considering a breakdown of the name ‘ICEing’
- This is when internal combustion engine cars block electrical charges places
Smart electric vehicle (EV) toll booths could soon impose fines of up to £ 70 on drivers who misuse the spaces – such as parking diesel or petrol cars in them.
Built by London-based AppyWay, bay sensors are able to detect the presence of parked vehicles – comparable to the use of cost ports.
For now, the tech is being used to allow local authorities to understand bay usage and help EV drivers find empty charging ports through the ‘AppyParking’ app.
However, Coventry council is said to be considering using the data to get rid of the so-called ‘ICEing’ – when bays are blocked by in-vehicle combustion engines.
Developed by London-based company AppyWay, bay sensors are able to detect the presence of parked vehicles – and whether they charge, as can be seen in the photo.

‘We are not using them for enforcement at the moment but there is the potential for the sensors to alert officers to future bay abuses,’ a Coventry council spokesman told the Times. .
The system works by placing a sensor inside the tarmac under the toll bay that can detect if any vehicle – whether electric or fossil fuels – is parked in the area. .
This information can then be cross-referenced with data on the toll station’s own activity to determine whether the bay is being used for its intended purpose – or for illegal parking.
AppyWay – whose app provides information on parking spaces in some 400 towns and cities across the UK – has also installed the sensing system in electric charging bays in Harrogate. and Halifax.
The sensors are also being used to monitor the use of disabled parking spaces within the City of London.
Next year will also see parking bay sensors in Portsmouth.

Coventry council is said to be considering using the data to bypass the so-called ‘ICEing’ – when electric vehicle cabins are blocked by indoor combustion engine vehicles.

The benefit of using the sensors for deployment purposes comes as it would ensure that investment in electric power stations can benefit EV drivers – and make them more adaptable. for others to move from fossil fuels.
In the UK, more than 144,000 pure electric and plug-in cars were sold to drivers this year – more than double the sales for 2019 – and accounted for almost 10 per cent of new recordings from last January.
An increase in electric vehicles is expected to rise in the next decade, with the government banning the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030 onwards.
