MELVILLE, NY, February 4, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Canon USA, Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, announced today that its flagship company, Canon Inc., has reached a new milestone in lens manufacturing with the production in January 2021, of the company’s 150-million RF and EF series transitional lens for EOS cameras1– RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM telephoto zoom lens (admitted November 2019).
Production of transitional EF lenses for Canon EOS-series AF (Autofocus) single-lens film cameras began in 1987 at the Company’s Utsunomiya Plant. Over the years, EF lenses have received support from a wide range of users and since then production has expanded to four manufacturing centers, including Canon Inc., Taiwan; Canon Opto (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd .; and Oita Canon Inc. in the south Japan.
EF lens output exceeded the 10-million-unit mark in 1995 and crossed the 50-million-unit threshold in 2009. In April 2014, the Company celebrated its achievement in the first place in the world by producing 100 million transitional lenses, and now, setting a new world record for the most interchangeable lenses out, Canon made its 150-million RF and EF lens in January 2021. End-to-end lay2, all of Canon ‘s RF and EF lenses to date measure approximately 7,736 miles in length – almost the equivalent of the Earth’ s diameter, which is approximately 7,917 miles.
Canon-owned EF lenses, launched in person March 1987 together with the EOS SLR camera system, has been growing since their introduction, leading the industry through the introduction of a wide range of innovative technologies, including its first in the world3 such as the Ultrasonic Motor (USM) technology, Image Stabilizer (IS), and multilayer diffractive optical element (DO).
In 2018, Canon introduced the EOS R system and RF series lenses, which track new heights of quality under the basic concept of “Speed, Comfort and High Image Quality.” The Company’s extensive line of RF and EF lens series includes a total of 118 models4, expanding the opportunities for image capture. In addition, thanks to the extensive line of lenses, Canon has maintained the leading market share for digital transitional lens cameras since 2003 – 17 years in total5– and into September 2019, the Company celebrated the production of 100 million EOS-series transitional lens cameras.
