Canon marks significant milestone with production of 150 million RF and EF converters

MELVILLE, NY, February 4, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Canon USA, Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, announced today that its flagship company, Canon Inc., has reached a new milestone in lens manufacturing with the production in January 2021, of the company’s 150-million RF and EF series transitional lens for EOS cameras1– RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM telephoto zoom lens (admitted November 2019).

Production of transitional EF lenses for Canon EOS-series AF (Autofocus) single-lens film cameras began in 1987 at the Company’s Utsunomiya Plant. Over the years, EF lenses have received support from a wide range of users and since then production has expanded to four manufacturing centers, including Canon Inc., Taiwan; Canon Opto (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd .; and Oita Canon Inc. in the south Japan.

EF lens output exceeded the 10-million-unit mark in 1995 and crossed the 50-million-unit threshold in 2009. In April 2014, the Company celebrated its achievement in the first place in the world by producing 100 million transitional lenses, and now, setting a new world record for the most interchangeable lenses out, Canon made its 150-million RF and EF lens in January 2021. End-to-end lay2, all of Canon ‘s RF and EF lenses to date measure approximately 7,736 miles in length – almost the equivalent of the Earth’ s diameter, which is approximately 7,917 miles.

Canon-owned EF lenses, launched in person March 1987 together with the EOS SLR camera system, has been growing since their introduction, leading the industry through the introduction of a wide range of innovative technologies, including its first in the world3 such as the Ultrasonic Motor (USM) technology, Image Stabilizer (IS), and multilayer diffractive optical element (DO).

In 2018, Canon introduced the EOS R system and RF series lenses, which track new heights of quality under the basic concept of “Speed, Comfort and High Image Quality.” The Company’s extensive line of RF and EF lens series includes a total of 118 models4, expanding the opportunities for image capture. In addition, thanks to the extensive line of lenses, Canon has maintained the leading market share for digital transitional lens cameras since 2003 – 17 years in total5– and into September 2019, the Company celebrated the production of 100 million EOS-series transitional lens cameras.

Canon will continue to update its imaging technologies based on the RF and EF lens line, trying to meet the diverse needs of photographers – from first-time users to amateurs and advanced professionals – while contributing to the expansion of the image and image culture.

Key features and technologies

EF300mm f / 2.8L USM6
November 1987

First in the world7 use of Lens Based Ultrasonic Motor (USM)

USM technology delivers fast automation thanks to its high torque and responsiveness. By converting ultrasonic vibrations to rotational energy, the technology makes quiet, smooth AF drive performance possible.

EF75-300mm f / 4-5.6 IS USM8
September 1995

First in the world7 use of Image Stabilizer (IS) technology

Users can see the results of IS technology through the browser. Delivering high accuracy and durability for excellent image stabilization results, this technology expands the possibilities for hand-drawn images.

EF400mm is f / 4 DO USM9
December 2001

First in the world7 use of an interactive optical lens (DO) element

A difference is an optical phenomenon in which light waves propagate as they go around the edges of an object. DO lens elements use this phenomenon to correct for a number of aberrations by controlling the path on which light travels.

EF24mm f / 1.4L II USM
December 2008

First in the world10 use of Subwavelength Structure Cover (SWC)

SWC technology helps reduce reflections by aligning moon-shaped structures with infinitely more precision than a visible light wavelength on the surface of a camera lens.

EF100mm f / 2.8L
Macro IS USM
October 2009

First in the world7 use of Hybrid IS, which compensates for both angle camera vibration and motion camera vibration

Using an algorithm, Hybrid IS optimizes adjustment for camera vibration based on information collected by two sensors located in the lens. By precisely driving the optical correction system, the technology simultaneously corrects for angle vibration and camera movement.

EF8-15mm f / 4L
Fisheye USM
July 2011

First in the world7 fisheye lens to deliver both 180-degree diagonal vision and 180-degree circular fisheye

The EF8-15mm f / 4L Fisheye USM enables the capture of images with striking deformations, enormous views and real depth of field, making images that can be very moving, similar to what fish would see if it looked skyward from underwater. cream.

EF200-400mm f / 4L IS
USM Extender 1.4x
May 2013

First in the world7 super-telephoto zoom lens to employ internal magnification

Incorporating a built-in 1.4xa amplifier, the EF200-400mm f / 4L IS USM Extender 1.4xa zoom range can be extended with simple one-touch operation even in areas where use lenses change

EF11-24mm f / 4L USM
February 2015

First in the world7 lens offering the minimum focal length at an angle of 11 mm

In addition to achieving the widest view in the world starting at a minimum focus level of 11 mm, the EF11-24mm f / 4L USM effectively corrects for aberrations that are like most commonly associated with ultra-wide lenses, delivering excellent image quality performance.

RF28-70mm F2 L USM
December 2018

First in the world11 standard zoom lens to deliver f / 2 aperture over the entire zoom range

Using a large internal diameter and a short focus back to achieve an f / 2 aperture over the entire zoom range, a task that was very difficult for EF series lenses.
