By the grace of God, blasphemy was avoided: construction on the Jewish cemetery in Uman was halted

By the grace of God Blessed, construction work on the Jewish cemetery in Uman was stopped – which began illegally by non-Jewish residents, who wanted to build a hotel on the site.

The desecration was prevented thanks to the mayor of Uman, Irena Platniova, who revoked the building permits given to the owners of the project, after the heads of the local Jewish community raised a shout.

According to reports in the local media and on the ‘Uman Shalom’ website, the cemetery was sold by the city council, and the Jewish community did not even know that its sale was forcing buyers to destroy it completely.

Representatives of local communities of Breslav and Chabad – whose construction is on a cemetery where dozens of Jews who were murdered at various times by the Cossacks and others are buried, turned to the mayor, asking her to stop construction.

The mayor, who understood that this was a holy place for the Jewish people, whose demolition was forbidden by Judaism, immediately gave her consent to stop the construction that had already begun, until it became clear who owned the place, according to the rules of law in the country.

Today (Tuesday) the desecration was completely avoided, after workers arrived at the cemetery with a tractor and intended to continue building the hotel illegally – without the permits from the municipality.

Police officers who were urgently called to the scene, stopped the construction and prevented the violation of the law.
