BMW CFO on Apple car: ‘Competition is amazing’

Rumors that Apple is working on an Apple-branded car will come out in the next decade, BMW Chief Financial Officer Nicolas Peter said today Bloomberg he is not concerned about the danger posed by an Apple vehicle.

“I sleep very peacefully,” said Peter when Bloomberg asked for his opinion on Apple entering the car market. “Competition is amazing – it helps to inspire others.”

He went on to explain that BMW is in a “very strong position” and wants to “stay in a leading position in the industry. “

BMW executives have been equally cautious about Tesla’s growing popularity in the car market. Chief Executive Oliver Zipse said in February that “it will not be easy” for Tesla to continue to grow at a rapid pace as traditional car manufacturers come out with electric vehicles. “The rest of the industry is moving forward a long time,” Zipse said.

Apple is said to be working on a vehicle designed and engineered by Apple that will be completely autonomous and electric. Apple is reportedly looking for manufacturing partners and at one point, it was considering Hyundai / Kia. We’re still many years away from Apple’s vehicle, however, with rumors revealing that work on the car is at an early stage with Apple planning to launch it in 2025 at the earliest.
