Binotto looking for Sainz to move the team forward

Mattia Binotto has said he hopes Carlos Sainz can help the team move up in the Builders Championship.

Ferrari the 2020 season ended down in P5, largely because Sebastian Vettel was unable to score anywhere near as many points as Charles Leclerc.

Sainz will be replaced for 2021, and the team principal hopes he can help the team move up in the team’s standing.

“What we expect from Carlos is a fast driver, he’s very strong,” Binotto said. GPFans.

“If you look at the 2020 season, it was a great season. I think it was even faster in terms of certification. If you look at the past few years, it was not so fast in quali on but I think in 2020 it was very strong in quali too.

“He is a very strong racer. I think he’s one of those drivers who finishes races quite often and usually, in the race, he improves his position compared to the quali.

“So I expect Carlos to contribute to the builders’ competition, which is very important to us. I think it’s important to have two drivers who deliver, or do very well in the race, to make as many points as we can for the builders ’title.

“I know that doing well in the builders’ way means that the drivers are doing very well in terms of driver classification but I’m sure Carlos will definitely help us by do better in terms of builders and as a whole as a team. ”

Driving alongside Leclerc, Sainz will become more familiar with the team drivers who came into the grid in 2015 and have driven for three other teams since then.

Binotto believes that such experience could be valuable to the team.

“It will bring experience, which is good in F1. It’s been several seasons now with different teams, ”he said.

“Also, different approaches to working with engineers, different approaches to establishment work so it gives us a different experience that we are open to listening to and ultimately over there, to learn where possible.

“I expect him to be a great player for Charles. I think the two find each other really well. I expect a hard worker.

“He’s a leader and I hope he will help develop the team and the team grows stronger in the future, and that’s already in 2021.”
