US President Joe Biden announced today (Friday) that he has invited 40 world leaders to a virtual climate summit to be held next month, April 22-23, to be broadcast live. Among the guests: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin , President of China Xi, King of Saudi Arabia Salman and many others.
As you may recall, on the first day he took office, Biden returned the United States to the Paris Agreement, and a few days later, on January 27, he announced that he would enter a summit of leaders to encourage the efforts of major economies to deal with the climate crisis.
The White House said the summit would highlight the urgency – and economic benefits – of more decisive action on climate change, and would be a significant milestone on the way to the UN climate conference (COP26) to be held this November in Glasgow. One of the key objectives is to expedite efforts to curb warming Global to 1.5 degrees Celsius, in order to avoid the worst effects of climate change.
Until the summit, the United States will declare an ambitious 2030 emissions target as its new national contribution under the Paris Agreement. At his invitation, the president urged leaders to use the summit as an opportunity to describe how their countries would also contribute to climate efforts.
The summit will reconvene the Forum of Large Economies on Energy and Climate, led by the United States, which unites 17 countries responsible for about 80 percent of global greenhouse gas and GDP emissions. The president has also invited other heads of state to demonstrate strong leadership in the climate, particularly vulnerable to climate impacts or to outline innovative pathways to a non-polluting economy. In addition, a number of social and business leaders were invited.
