Less than three years since he was appointed national team coach, Jerzy Bezczek was fired today (Monday) and fired from his post in Poland, the local association said in an official statement. The news caught the media in the country in complete surprise and it is not clear who will replace him.
The association said: “The Polish association confirms that Siji Bezczak has been released today from his position as national team coach. We would like to thank him for his slavery in the national team so far.” In addition, the association announced that it will hold a press conference this coming Thursday with the participation of the president.
The local media responded to the surprising news: “This is not a resignation, he was fired. This is a professional decision made after an analysis of what awaits us in 2021. The decision makers are very disappointed with the situation.” At the same time, a leading Polish website claims that Abram Grant, who holds Polish citizenship, is a candidate for the position.
Berezhek, a former Maccabi Haifa star, led the Polish team to Euro 2020, which was postponed and will take place this summer. The Poles were drawn for the final tournament at home to Spain, Sweden and Slovakia. Since being appointed in July 2018, the coach has led Poland to 12 wins, 5 losses and 7 draws.
