Actor Ben Affleck in his recent portrayal of Jack Cunningham in the film The way back has earned him praise from critics as well as filmmakers. In The way back, it showed the character of a former high school basketball star, who walked away from the game only to return as coach of his alma mater team.
In the film, the audience learns that his character has suffered great pain from his battle with alcohol, the end of his marriage and the loss of his child. In a recent roundtable discussion with The Hollywood Reporter, Ben Affleck talked about how the character and the film felt with him on various levels.

Ben Affleck on alcohol and his character in The way back
During the discussion, Affleck revealed that he is an alcoholic himself. He also said that the film is about grief and the loss of a child. He added that it may be ‘the worst thing’ that one gets. However, the film and its character also focus a lot on alcohol.
In the discussion, Ben Affleck said that alcohol and compulsive behavior are not very interesting, but sometimes what is interesting is what one finds about themselves at the time of overcoming it. He also shared that he feels that the interesting part is trying to find out what went wrong, how he could fix it and how one would want his life to look and what the kind of ethic he wants to lead life with. Speaking of his battles with alcohol, Ben Affleck said he is an alcoholic, that he was again and that he went again.
According to a report by eonline.com, Ben Affleck has publicly discussed his own battles with alcohol and his sobriety journey in the past. Just like his character in The way back, it has also undergone separation. He and Jennifer Garner had decided to file for divorce in 2015. The former couple had tied the knot in 2005 and shared the children of Violet, 15; Seraphina, 12; and Samuel, 8. They officially filed for divorce in 2017 and separated the following year.
