Beeple is the most expensive NFT ever sold at auction, peaking at $ 60 million

A meaningful piece of art entitled “Everydays: The First 5000 Days.” Created by digital artist Beeple, this is the first NFT-based artwork to be auctioned at Christie’s.

Christie’s

A hilarious token by artist Beeple sold at Christie’s for more than $ 60 million, making it the most expensive NFT ever sold at auction.

The final selling price could move higher as final bids are processed and auction fees added, which could bring the total to more than $ 69 million. But the sale ended two weeks of frenzied online applications and ushers in a new era in collectibles, where prices for blockchain-based digital images now compete with prices for Picassos and Monets. While future NFT pricing and the long-term career in the art world is still an open question, and many see it as an approximate length, the eight-figure price for the Beeple has led to the art world suddenly attracts attention.

“As soon as I saw it, I saw it as the huge potential for this as a platform for digital ownership of a handful of different things, not just art,” said artist Mike Winkelmann, known as best Beeple, to CNBC. “Moving forward, I think this will see another form of asset class.”

The modern work, titled “The First 5,000 Days” was the first ever sold at a large auction house.

In 2007, Winkelmann aimed to post a new work of digital art every day for the rest of his life and never missed a single day. The first 5,000 of these jobs, dubbed “Everydays,” were combined to form “The first 5,000 days.”

NFTs, which are any blockchain-listed digital assets, have become a $ 400 million market – much of that in the past month. Jack Dorsey turned the first ever tweet from 2006 into an NFT that currently has a high bid of $ 2.5 million. NBA Top Shots, which are NFTs of NBA scene videos, have exploded in popularity, with sales reaching $ 200 million and LeBron James video selling for $ 208,000. Musician and artist Grimes has sold more than $ 6 million in videos and music.

Until Christie’s sale, the most expensive NFT ever sold was a Beeple work that was pushed by its owner for $ 6.6 million.

It is unclear whether major art auction houses will follow. Sotheby’s said it had not made any announcements about future NFT sales and Phillips said it had “no NFT news to share” at the moment.
