Bill Gates believes that future generations need to be open when it comes to adopting new technologies aimed at combating climate change.
“We want to be open to ideas that look wild,” Gates said Friday in his latest Ask Me Anything session on Reddit.
Microsoft’s co-founder’s ninth Q&A session (the first of which was back in 2013) focused on climate change, both in terms of the steps he personally takes each day to reduce carbon emissions and the future of people we need to continue to embrace technologies that aim to address the impending crisis.
Gates, who recently wrote a new book titled “How you can avoid a climate catastrophe,” posted a question in a Reddit forum from a user who asked: “What particular technology are you thinking that could play a key role in the future of the fight against climate change? “
Instead of highlighting one particular technology, philanthropists responded by billions by saying that future generations must rely on “a lot of technologies,” including “synthetic meat, energy storage , new ways of making building materials, ”Gates replied before noting the importance of openness when it comes to adopting specific technologies that help reduce the impact of climate change.
“Fusion may come but we can’t count on it,” Gates said, referring to nuclear fusion technology that has the potential to produce unlimited clean energy, although the technology is expected to be several years away . (The start-up of Gates-backed nuclear smelting, known as Commonwealth Fusion Systems, hopes to deliver fusion energy on the power grid by “early 2030s.”)
For all its worth, Gates himself has embraced and encouraged some of the new technologies he has named, such as synthetic meat and energy storage. Earlier in Reddit AMA on Friday, Gates talked about the steps he is personally taking to reduce his own carbon footprint.
“On the personal side, I do a lot more,” Gates wrote. “I drive electric cars. I have solar panels at my house. I eat synthetic meat (some of the time!). I buy green air fuel. I pay for direct air capture with Climeworks. I help fund low cost electric heat pumps. cost of housing instead of natural gas. “
Gates published his new book in February, and the billionaire has spent the past few months regularly talking about climate change, which he says could create a global crisis which is worse than the common coronavirus pandemic (a topic that has also been suspected over the past year) in the next few decades.
In a February interview of 60 minutes, CBS, Gates told Anderson Cooper that dealing successfully with a climate change crisis was “the most amazing thing man has ever done,” but said it would it’s a “total effort,” like a world war, but it opposes greenhouse gases. “
In his book, Gates also addresses various ways in which the average person can deal with climate change in their daily lives, including political communication and discussing the issue with family and friends, and as well as purchasing more sustainable products.
