Barcelona midfielder Alena has been sacked for leaving Camp Nou, Koeman confirms

The La Masia product has struggled to establish itself this term and is expected to move in January

Barcelona have allowed midfielder Carles Alena to leave the club this month, with the player expected to move on loan.

The 23-year-old La Masia has struggled to establish himself under Ronald Koeman this season, with just one of his five performances across La Liga and the Champions League coming in the XI starting.

The career of the best midfielder in appearance came for Barca in the 2018-19 campaign, when he played 27 times in all competitions for the Blaugrana.

Alena spent the second half of last season on loan at Real Betis, and Getafe has been linked with his services on a contract that is likely to run until the end of the season.

“Alena is allowed from the club to go out in search of him,” Koeman said at a news conference ahead of Wednesday’s trip to the Athletic Club.

“When everything is done, I will be able to comment, but there are players who can decide whether to stay or not. He has decided to seek his career.”

Barca prepared for their trip to San Mames was hit by two advanced coronavirus cases among club staff on Monday.

That prompted him to postpone pre-game training and media duties until later on Tuesday, when it was confirmed that Koeman’s team had a clean health team regarding Covid-19.

“There are things in life that can’t be controlled,” said the former Dutch leader. “We have followed the protocol by suspending the training this morning and repeating the PCR tests.

“We could only hope that there were no more positive things. Thank you that everyone has come out negative and we were able to prepare for tomorrow’s game.”

Barcelona entered the game in the fifth, 10 points behind leaders Atletico Madrid after playing a game more.

Despite a tough fixture record this month, Koeman has not refused to include a reinforcement to support a strained title challenge.

“Any team will be looking at how the squad can be improved in January,” he said.

“I make my plans about seeing the potential casualty and what the players are [we need] to bring. But if it’s not possible, I’ll have the same players. “
