Second set: Ash Barty * 6-1, 6-6 Daria Gavrilova (signaling the server) Barty has twice failed to serve for the game, but when he serves to stay in this set, she does enough to keep him going. Except just; she has worked for it. Barty gets weird on her own and gets vocal about it. You don’t often see that. Into a bondage we go.

Second set: Ash Barty 6-1, 5-6 Daria Gavrilova * (signaling the server) This game has just become interesting. Gavrilova remains restless and now leads Barty, having set 5-2. Say turn! Are we in the midst of an incredible return? It definitely makes this next game very, very interesting.

Second set: Ash Barty * 6-1, 5-5 Daria Gavrilova (marking the server) Murmurs from the stands will tell you everything you need to have as Barty drops to 0-30 while trying to handle this game. And when the No. 1 world is far ahead of rule, it has two breakpoints. One is saved but not the second! Really incredible, but Gavrilova is back on level terms! And Barty is not at all happy with herself. She refuses to knock on her rack, instead choosing to punch herself with it (on her thigh with a lot of weight, no less!).

Second set: Ash Barty 6-1, 5-4 Daria Gavrilova * (signaling the server) Gavrilova races to a 40-0 lead and, although she makes several mistakes on her way, she manages to get a grip on him. She needs to break now to stay in the game and keep alive hopes that she will come back.

Second set: Ash Barty * 6-1, 5-3 Daria Gavrilova (signaling the server) Gavrilova pulls out some of the best tennis she’s played today in this 15th game of the game, a clever move to the net setting her on the path to a 40-0 lead. Barty runs twice down the T – her sixth and seventh days – to save two resting points, but can’t hold a three-pointer and Gavrilova hangs in there with a break. time of service!

Second set: Ash Barty 6-1, 5-2 Daria Gavrilova * (signaling the server) Gavrilova, at 40-30 up, opts to try a rear shot. He falls sadly into the net, and wonders what she was thinking with that decision. It determines the turning point of this game; Barty is brutal from then on and she breaks again. The world No 1 now caters for the game.

Second set: Ash Barty * 6-1, 4-2 Daria Gavrilova (signaling the server) Gavrilova is looking to find a bullet but her hand lies just the wrong side of the line to Barty’s left. But she has no monopoly on track scenes and Barty gives Gavrilova two point chances with one of her own. Barty, however, saves both, the latter with a rusty Nadal-esque hand. The top player here at Melbourne Park is on-going. Close but no fertilizer for Gavrilova this time.

Second set: Ash Barty 6-1, 3-2 Daria Gavrilova * (signaling the server) Now Barty pulls out a lob from the deep drawer of shots, successfully so, while Gavrilova struggles to land her big pictures. The gap in levels between the two goes further into the game we go, and Barty breaks to be ahead for the first time in this set.
02:45
Second set: Ash Barty * 6-1, 2-2 Daria Gavrilova (signaling the server) Barty moves into the net and the volleys – we haven’t seen that so far today – early in a simpler service game for her. She still doesn’t fire on all the cylinders, and she clearly has a reserve.
02:41
Second set: Ash Barty 6-1, 1-2 Daria Gavrilova * (signaling the server) “C’mon!” shouted Gavrilova after running around a forehand to beat her fifth advance winner of the day. But the struggles of service continue for her; Barty takes advantage of a break-back and is back in stuff this set.
02:38
Second set: Ash Barty * 6-1, 0-2 Daria Gavrilova (signaling the server) Barty is blowing hot and cold on service right now – back aces should take it to 1-1 but she makes life difficult for herself with a pair of double fractures, with the latter giving him a place to rest Gavrilova. Her first service is into the net and when she gets the ball in, she goes a long way. Gavrilova breaks at first asking!
02:32
Second set: Ash Barty 6-1, 0-1 Daria Gavrilova * (signaling the server) Gavrilova has a bit of trouble with throwing her ball in this game, apologizing to Barty more than once or twice after exertive efforts, but she manages to keep her focus and keep it to 15. The importance of the That grip will be clear as we move through this second set.
Over on Margaret Court Arena, a veteran Svetlana Kuznetsova has taken a second set against him Belinda Bencic, the 11th seed.

First set: Ash Barty 5-1 Daria Gavrilova * (signaling server) Barty sports a bit of strapping on her left thigh, at least, although she seems to be moving freely enough at this point. And it certainly doesn’t affect the scoreboard – the world of No 1 breaks again. If there is any comfort for Gavrilova at this stage it has already surpassed the 10 rare points that led to Danka Kovinić two days ago in Barty ‘s opening game.
02:19
First set: Ash Barty * 4-1 Daria Gavrilova (signaling the server) Gavrilova closes his fist after enjoying a big preseason winner, but is wide from a narrow angle at the net on the next point. Yet she pushes a deuce and then saves a game point with a big, aggressive advance – encouraging signs, if she can keep track of her radar. But it’s wide again soon after and Barty holds on. Of course up and down play from both players so far and a pattern to the game has yet to emerge. However, without setting the field on fire yet, Barty has a three-game advantage.
02:13
First set: Ash Barty 3-1 Daria Gavrilova * (signaling server) Gavrilova lays down the first ace of the game to a point at 30-30 but then offers Barty another break from a ball that comes straight out at the bottom line. And a double fault sees Barty break for the second time.
02:08
First set: Ash Barty * 2-1 Daria Gavrilova (signaling the server) Barty’s double cracks are half way through this game, but she repeats and, after a previous winner played all over Gavrilova, she holds on for the first time today as Gavrilova a ‘shoot one wide.
02:06
First set: Ash Barty 1-1 Daria Gavrilova * (signposted server) In fact, Rod Laver is a completely different beast compared to last night ‘s wild feeling for Nick Kyrgios. It’s been pretty slow so far, but that should change as we go along. Barty immediately breaks back when Gavrilova plays some of her own scatter shots. Back to service in the opener!
2:01
First set: Ash Barty * 0-1 Daria Gavrilova (pointing to the server) Oh dear, it wasn’t the first time the senior player wanted his service. Barty is up against three points of rest after a couple of non-critical errors and, despite responding with an ace to pull back to 15-40, another sloppy shot, into the net this time , giving Gavrilova the opening game.
01:59
Barty and Gavrilova (Ash and Dash in case you were not aware) are out on the court, warming up. Gavrilova is on her way back from injury, but Barty spoke ahead of the game of her challenge today.
“It’s going to be a challenge,” Barty said. “I like it – I like to test against other Aussies. ”
Okay, we’re good to go. Barty with the ball in his hand first. Done? Game.
01:56
This isn’t just about Barty today, of course. Up behind this one in the middle are Stefanos Tsitsipas and Thanasi Kokkinakis in a game that is sure to capture the imagination of the region (especially in the Greek community of Melbourne). Then Coco Gauff playing fifth seed Elina Svitolina first in the evening session, and then Rafael Nadalbig win over Michael Mmoh. Sofia Kenin and Daniil Medvedev also in action, with a number of local hopes, including Alex De Minaur, Sam Stosur and Alexei Popyrin.

The reason for that brief introduction is that I got caught up in something on the hop, given how fast it is Karolína Plíšková plowing through the end of the second set against him Danielle Collins in the game just finished on Rod Laver Arena. After the first set that was fairly matched, the sixth Czech seed took just another 35 minutes to complete a 7-5, 6-2 win over her American rival. She moves into the third round against another Czech Karolína, Karolína Muchová.
