ROME (Reuters) – Archaeologists in Pompeii, the city ‘s burial in a volcanic eruption in 79 AD, have unearthed the discovery of a frescoed food and beverage store that donated ancient food similar to Roman food.
Known as a termopolium, Latin for hot drinks counts, the store was found on the Regio V site at the archeology park, which is not yet open to the public, and was published Saturday.
Nearly 2,000 years of food was found in some of the deep terra cotta jars containing hot food that the shopkeeper put down to a counter with round holes.
The front of the counter was decorated with brightly colored frescoes, some depicting animals that were part of the ingredients in the food sold, such as a chicken and two ducks hanging upside down.
“This is an amazing discovery.” This is the first time we have excavated an entire termopolium, ”said Massimo Ossana, director of the Pompeii archaeological park.
Archaeologists also found a decorated bronze drinking bowl called patera, ceramic jars used to cook stews and soups, wine flasks and amphora.

about 13,000 people when buried under ashes, pumice pebbles
and dust as it suffered an explosive force equal to
many atomic bombs.
“Our preliminary analyzes show that the figures are drawn in front of the counter, representing, at least in part, the food and drink sold there,” said Valeria Amoretti. , site anthropologist.
Amoretti said traces of pigs, fish, snails and beef had been found in the vessels, which she cited as “evidence of the wide variety of animals used in the preparation of vessels”.
About two-thirds of the ancient 66-hectare (165-acre) village was discovered. The ruins were not discovered until the 16th
century and organized excavations began around 1750.
