When the Apple Silicon-powered Macs were launched, Apple stopped its competitors. And the Cupertino-based company is not resting on those benchmarks. Plans for the 2021 upgrades to the M1 chip along with some new hardware are pretty impressive, but the big 2022 change is going to be a surprise to the competition.

The M1 architecture is built around 5nm silicon fabrication. According to the latest reports, Apple has placed an order with TSMC for 3nm manufacturing. The team at GSMArena has more:
“Sources familiar with the matter say what he said [3nm] chips may power up iPads and MacBooks in the future. This means we will see 5nm or maybe 5nm + chips for another year. TSMC is almost finished with the certification process so it is likely that they will start testing next year while mass production takes place in 2022.
“While the rumor is talking about MacBooks and iPad M-series chips, it seems safe to assume that iPhones in 2022 will likely use the same technology.”
The ARM-based Apple Silicon debut with the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and Mac M1-powered Mini devices has given the macOS platform in the arm a big boost in terms of raw performance. In the mid-range consumer range both MacBooks offer powerful alternatives with higher benchmark outputs than comparable Windows 10-powered laptops.
Those already rooted in the macOS platform will welcome these enhancements when it comes time to update the Mac. The next phase of upgrades (the titled M1X flight and the next M2 phase) is expected to feature in new hardware 2021s; my money is on a high-end MacBook Pro for the M1X and the first iMac and Mac Pro debating with the new ARM hardware.
This should come as no surprise that Apple has secured a high value of 5nm chip manufacturing lines in advance, and the demand is so high that Apple’s ban with TSMC may have to being a ‘favorite partner’ status as Samsung Foundry is looking for a piece of the action.
Thanks to the latest reports we will see what happens in 2022, which is the launch of a new class M processor built on 3nm technology. That should offer a choice of greater performance for Apple hardware compared to the 5nm chips, less power consumption, or a combination of both. Given the advantages the M1 has already shown over Intel’s Core chips, we are unlikely to see the same major performance gain.
