Apple launches tool to transfer photos and videos from iCloud Photos to Google Photos

Apple has launched a new tool that allows iCloud users to easily and conveniently transfer the photos and videos they store in the company’s iCloud Photos service to Google’s competing Google Photos service. The new solution allows users to quickly and easily switch between the various media storage services, in a transfer process that takes about 3 to 7 days.

Apple’s new image transfer tool comes as part of the DTP (Data Transfer Project) project, created in a relatively rare collaboration between Facebook, Apple, Google, Microsoft and Twitter, and is designed to allow simple, secure and fast information transfer between the various services of the project partners. Apple’s new tool actually joins a similar Facebook photo transfer tool that was launched in late 2019 and became available in Israel during 2020.

In order to transfer the photos from iCloud to Google Photos, all users have to do is log in to privacy.apple.com with their iCloud account and choose to transfer the media to Google Photos, when necessary because at the expense of The user’s Apple ID will enable 2-step verification to make the transfer, with the addition of sufficient storage space in Google’s cloud.

The new tool will be able to transfer a large variety of media files along with the structure of their albums in iCloud, but special photos and albums in iCloud such as “Smart Albums”, “Live Photos” and some RAW photos are not supported In the transfer, when there is an additional limit of 20,000 media files per album from the Google Photos side.

Apple’s new image transfer tool from iCloud Photos to Google Photos will initially be available to users from Australia, Canada, the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland, the UK and the United States, with service availability not expected in Israel.

This is another initiative designed to make it easier for the consumer to move (along with his media collection) between the services of various companies without having to spend a lot of time doing the work manually, as has been the case so far.
