People who have received the Covid-19 vaccine should avoid alcohol as it can reduce the body ‘s immune response to the injection, experts have warned.

Alcohol alters the make-up of trillions of microorganisms that live in the gut that play an important role in preventing the invasion of bacteria and viruses.

This leads to damage of immune cells in the blood, called white blood cells, including lymphocytes, which produce antibodies to attack viruses.

Emergency medicine specialist Dr Ronx Ikharia performed a test in which they took blood samples before and after drinking three glasses of Prosecco.

Dr Ikharia, presenter of the BBC documentary The Truth About … Stimulating your immune system which shouts on Wednesday, found that three glasses were enough to bring the levels of lymphocyte cells in their blood down by as much as 50 percent.

Psychologist Professor Sheena Cruickshank, at the University of Manchester, said the reduction in lymphocytes could reduce the effectiveness of the body’s immune response.

Professor Cruickshank has therefore urged people to avoid alcohol around the time of their Covid-19 vaccination.

Professor Cruickshank said: ‘You need to work your immune system to work quickly to respond well to the vaccine, so if you drink the night before, or shortly after, that will not be the case. is helpful. ‘

In adults, lymphocytes make up about 20 to 40 percent of the total number of white blood cells and are accumulated in central lymphoid organs, such as the spleen, tonsils, and lymph nodes, where whether there is likely to be an initial protective response.

Lymphocytes are of ‘fundamental importance’ in the immune system because they determine an immune response to infectious microorganisms and other foreign substances, such as the SARS-CoV-2 virus, according to a team of scientists in Wuhan, China.
