Hundreds of volunteers took part Saturday in clean-up work off the coast of Israel as investigations continue to find out the cause of a threatening beach and wildlife oil spill.
Israeli media reported that several volunteers were admitted to the hospital after inhaling smoke. The Israeli Nature and Parks Authority has urged people to stay away from the beach at 16 of the most polluted communities.
From as far north as Haifa and down south to Ashkelon near Gaza, black stripes can be seen on the Mediterranean coast.
At Gador Nature Reserve near the northern city of Hadera, the fish were smeared with tar, turtles, and other sea creatures.
Nature and Parks Authority ‘s Carmel area director Dudi Weiner said it would take years to repair the damage caused by the spill.
“In the last 20 years we have not had a catastrophe of this proportion,” he said. -some of the ecological damage is due to large amounts of tar settling on the rocky reefs and the rocks that appear at low tide out of the water. there is a lot of tar that has stuck to them. “
The cause and timing of the spill have not yet been determined, but stormy weather earlier in the week is believed to have pushed the polluters ashore.
