Peretz announced his intentions while the petition surrounding the question of holding primaries among the incumbents is still awaiting a Supreme Court decision.

As part of his political career, Peretz has held a number of senior positions including Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defense and Minister of Environmental Protection. In their public activities he is most identified with the Iron Dome project he initiated and led during his time in the Ministry of Defense, with the struggle he raised to raise the minimum wage and pension laws and with the establishment of the National Emergency Authority – and especially with the periphery.
