Alcoa shares are falling despite an earnings blow

Shares fell in Wednesday’s extended session after the aluminum company’s quarterly yields exceeded Wall Street expectations but warned that performance could deteriorate if its markets did not recover . Shares of Alcoa declined 3% after hours, following a 1.1% decline to close the regular session at $ 22.84. The company reported a fourth-quarter loss of $ 4 million, or 2 cents a share, compared to a loss of $ 303 million, or $ 1.63 a share, in the year-ago period. Improved earnings were 26 cents an allowance, compared to a loss of 31 cents an allowance in the previous year. Revenue declined to $ 2.39 billion from $ 2.44 billion in the fourth year ago. Analysts conducted by FactSet had forecast earnings of 11 cents a share on revenue of $ 2.38 billion. For the first quarter, Alcoa said it expects “lower quarterly performance” in both bauxite and aluminum unless markets improve.
