Saina makers recently announced that the Parineeti Chopra star will hit theaters on March 26th. They shared the film’s poster and video teaser on various social media platforms Tuesday. The sports biopic is based on the life of Indian badminton champion Saina Nehwal.
Shortly after the poster of the film was released, although some people expressed love for it, others found cracks with it. The poster elicited humorous comments from Twitter users as they quickly exposed the ‘mistake’ made by the makers regarding the badminton service.
On Wednesday night, the film’s director Amole Gupte took to Facebook and broke his silence about the controversy. Redistributing the film’s poster, Gupe wrote, “There is too much profit in digital media about the poster…” looks like a tennis service… Saina makes Sania “etc etc.… If Saina is the flying shuttle, then to bright, the girl’s hand with the national color band is the hand of the Indian Girl who wants to reach the heights of Saina !!! ”
Gupte went on to say that it was unfortunate that he had to explain the poster created by Rahul Nanda. He said, “Unfortunately a Concept Poster by Rahul Nanda needs to be explained in detail to a fast-paced, intolerant world … without stopping to think before rubbing anything !!! Socho !!! ”
Many Twitter users had commented that the shuttlecock service seen on the poster looked more like a tennis service than badminton. One Twitter user wrote, “Bollywood creativity at its best. As usual. Another said, “Bangea tennis Badminton.”
The long-running biopic of India’s top badminton player Saina Nehwal was expected to be released in 2020, but due to the outbreak of COVID-19, it was delayed. The film star Parineeti Chopra is directed by Gupte and produced by Bhushan Kumar’s T-Series.
