After emergency surgery to remove a fingerprint, Tyler McCumber goes unscathed

LOS ANGELES – A week that started with a painful injury and even more traumatic surgery on his index finger took a better leg on Thursday for Tyler McCumber.

McCumber shook his finger in a sliding window at his hotel Tuesday and was told by the competition doctor that it would be too painful for him to play. But there was another option.

“Fortunately, the surgeon is on site, the emergency surgeon is a hand specialist,” McCumber said. “He said we can do an approach where we tear the nail, but half of the nail is still intact. ”

Not getting into the details, although he offered to show reporters a video of the surgery he shot on his phone, McCumber explained that the procedure allowed him to swing with less pain and the result was 67 without bogey for a fourth-place portion at the Genesis Invitational.

McCumber uses a cross-over grip that limits what he puts on the injured finger, although he had to cut the index finger out of his golf bowl due to the swelling and the bands.

“It simply came to our notice then. It hurt a little today, ”he said. “It’s a lot smaller without the keyboard there, but you can tell it’s just kind of grinding all the way through this bandage. Riviera will take your mind off the pain. ”
