In the shadow of Barcelona’s victory last night (Saturday) over Osasuna, club members (Socius) began voting this morning for the next president to be elected. Joan Laporta, the favorite to win and the one who managed Barcelona between 2003 and 2010, competes against Victor Font and Tony Freisha, and hopes to return for a second term at the club as the strongest man.
According to initial sample results, Laporta is indeed expected to be appointed to the club presidency after receiving about 60 percent of the vote. The official announcement is expected to be announced tonight (Sunday through Monday).
110,290,000 eligible voters from around the world will decide who will be the club’s 42nd president. All three presidential representatives were spotted at the polls, as were some Barcelona players, including Leo Messi who arrived accompanied by his eldest son Thiago, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets and Ricky Pouch, as well as former disgraced president Joseph Maria Bartomeu.
Laporta will face quite a few challenges as president. In addition to the first and most obvious attempt to keep Leo Messi on the team, the new-old president plans to upgrade La Masia, the club’s youth department, to a center of sporting excellence, appointing a new managerial and professional backbone that could well include Jordi Cruyff as technical secretary. Dealing with the club’s duties, strengthening the staff this coming summer, and deciding on the identity of the coach.
