AB InBev serves greener packaging for Corona liquor

Mexican Beer Corona has launched a barley-based package for six packages outside the U.S., which the company says needs fewer resources.

The beer brand, which owns Belgian beverage giant Anheuser-Busch InBev SA only in the U.S., said Thursday that the use of barley straw – along with fully recycled wood fibers – instead of crushed wood a traditional virgin uses 90% less water, along with less energy and fewer harsh chemicals. It took three years to develop the package, which will behave like paper when recycled.

Brewers use barley seeds to make beer, but barley straw is left over from farmers’ harvests.

Corona said the new packaging with 10,000 six-packs will begin as a pilot in Colombia this month, followed by Argentina later this year, as the company looks to scale up. worldwide package.
