A pair of passengers take off on a NYC flight by slip before taking off

NEW YORK (AP) – Delta flight out of New York City has been canceled after a man and woman carrying a service dog got out of the plane using an emergency slide , a spokesman for the airline said Tuesday.

The incident happened Monday when the jet was taking off for the flight from LaGuardia Airport to Atlanta, spokesman Morgan Durrant said.

Witnesses said they saw an energetic-looking man traveling with the female force open a cabinet door and jump out using the emergency cute that led to the runway. The woman quickly followed him with the dog.

Passenger Brian Plummer told the New York Times, before they left, that the pair had changed seats several times on a flight that was not full. The last man stood up and heeded the order of a flight attendant to take a seat for takeoff, Plummer said.

The man told the flight attendant he could not sit quietly because of his post-traumatic stress disorder, Plummer said.

The planes had to return to the gate where the other customers got off and were later put on other flights.

It was not clear if the two passengers would incur any expenses.

The incident commemorated the case of Steven Slater in 2010, a JetBlue flight attendant who installed a fence during a tantrum on a plane landing at Kennedy Airport. He went on the public address system, swore at a passenger who said he had behaved rudely, grabbed a beer and slipped on the tarmac.

Slater was sent to a probationary year after completing a court-ordered treatment program.
