What is SpaceX Starship?
At the SpaceX event in 2016, Elon Musk outlines his philosophy by saying, “History is going to be two-way in two directions. According to the SpaceX website, the term “Starship” collectively refers to SpaceX’s Starships and its Super Heavy rocket. It represents a transport system that is completely reusable.
Designed to carry cargo and crew to orbit Earth, Mars, the Moon and beyond, the Starship is positioned as the most powerful launch vehicle developed in the world. It will be able to carry loads over 100 metric tons to Earth orbit.
The Starship stands at 120 meters or 394 feet high.
The stainless steel spaceship resembles ships from the golden age of science fiction, from the wings landing to the tip of her nose.
The Upper Level is 50 meters or 160 feet long, includes a pay-per-view section that will be able to drag large loads and people to the desired location in a deep location.
The propellant tanks located near the center of the spacecraft feed melt oxygen (O2) and methane (CH4) to six Birds of Prey engines also developed by SpaceX. The engines are reusable methalox combustion engines that power the Starship launch system.
Flight testing of Birds of Prey engines began in July 2019, becoming the first full-fledged full-range rocket engine to be flown.
According to an article by the BBC, SpaceX has spent more than a decade developing the Raptor engine and its unique fuel system.
Methane is not the usual source of fuel for space exploration. However, according to Musk, methane can be imported from the surface of the Red Planet if the colonies are established.
The 70-meter-long or 230-foot Super Heavy rockets will be filled with 3,400 tons or 6.8 million pounds of cryogenic methalox. The rockets powered by 28 Raptor engines deliver 16 million pounds or 72 Meganewtons of effort.
Together, the beams from the Super Heavy rockets and the Raptor will be able to lift at least 100 tons of cargo, crew, and payload to Earth’s low orbit.
Super Heavy is more powerful than the Saturn V launcher used at Apollo Lunar Missions in the 1960s and 1970s.
According to Musk, the Starship will be used for long trips to and from the Red Planet that could take up to nine months for each trip. The CEO also plans to install about 40 cabins in the high gate payment area.
Despite the early stages of testing and development, Elon Musk’s new Starship is slated to become a game changer in space travel and exploration.
