Several regional governments in Japan have called for a state of emergency confirmation such as the one the Prime Minister sent to the Tokyo area to halt the high rise in coronavirus cases.

The leaders of the prefectures of Osaka, Kyoto and Hyogo in central Japan sent their request to Yasutoshi Nishimura, the minister in charge of coronavirus measures, in an online conference call Saturday, Osaka Gov. Hirofumi Yoshimura told reporters.

No immediate decision was made, but the government’s panel of medical experts will investigate the situation, Yoshimura said.

Japan’s state of emergency, which kicked Friday in Tokyo and nearby Kanagawa, Saitama and Chiba, is centered around a call for restaurants and bars to close at 8pm. It lasts for a month but can be extended.
