NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has spent decades looking at some of the most distant parts of the cosmos, but its latest discovery happened much closer to home. Scientists using Hubble to monitor the freezing planet Neptune have discovered that a massive “dark spot” storm is churning into the atmosphere of something unexpected.

The storm, which appears to be a dark place from here on Earth, was moving south across the planet when it was spotted in 2019. Now, as NASA appears there the new blog post, more recent images taken in 2020 show the storm is returning. , going back north and moving away from the planet area where the storms disappear.

Perhaps what seems to be even more interesting than a spaceless directional movement of the vast dark space is that of a friend. A much narrower, but still visible, dark place appeared next to the main storm, suggesting that it may have been created by the larger storm. Over time, the smaller storm moved away from its larger contemporaries and then out of sight.

“We’re excited about these ideas because this smaller dark chip may be part of a dark space riot process,” said Michael H. Wong of the University of California at Berkeley, a scientist studying the onions. “This is a process that has never been seen before. We’ve seen other dark spots disappear, and they’re gone, but we haven’t seen anything bothering with it, even as would be expected in computer simulations. ”
