A fresh start makes it easy for you to hack your IKEA kitchen

IKEA home hackers no longer have to scour flea markets and garden sales to find design inspiration. As Co.Design reports, a new UK-based company will be selling furniture accessories made specifically for the IKEA Metod line. Homeowners only have to install the materials – no staining, painting or joinery required.

Before digital product designer Tim Diacon and furniture designer Adam Vergette created Plykea, they transformed IKEA furniture in the old-fashioned way. Together they refurbished a Deacon kitchen using plywood. Now, they are using that DIY project as a basis for getting started.

Plykea sells birch plywood doors, countertops, cover panels, handles, and drawer fronts, all designed to replace IKEA’s Metod kitchen cabinets. Buyers can opt for rustic wood exterior or purchase Formica finished pieces. The company also makes cabinet handles from bronze, a material specially selected to enhance the wood.

A kitchen with Plykea will cost you more than a typical IKEA hockey session: Average orders come out at around $ 2600 per buyer. Mobile homeowners can always take the cheaper route: Materials like spray paint and contact paper can be used to change furniture without cleaning your pockets.
