93,000 5.56 mm bullets were stolen from Tselim

Precisely after the IDF invested millions in securing investments in the army, last week 93,000 5.56 mm bullets were stolen from the ammunition bunker of the Tzelim Land Training Center (MLI).

The MPC began investigating the incident, but one estimate is that the thieves had prior knowledge that helped them break into the place and load many ammunition boxes worth an estimated NIS million in a short time.

It is no secret that the large areas of fire in the Tselim area serve as a fertile ground for theft. Last June, it was reported that soldiers from the Tze’elim base were attacked by Bedouin who were trying to steal equipment from the base. The thieves and their friends surrounded a military jeep with their civilian vehicles, and when one of the soldiers felt threatened – he fired into the air.

It will be recalled that only recently did the Chief of Staff order the dismissal of officers in the 769th Brigade, following the theft of 38 weapons from the brigade base near the Lebanese border. It is not inconceivable that after an in-depth investigation this time steps will be taken against those involved in stealing ammunition.

An IDF spokesman said: “This week, a burglary was discovered at an ammunition depot at an IDF base in the south of the country, during which military ammunition was stolen. The incident is being investigated and the military police have begun investigating the circumstances.”
