90Hz refresh rate, camera below the screen and more

Samsung Display, Samsung’s screen manufacturing division, unveils the next generation of OLED screens for laptops, including 14-inch OLED screens and a 90Hz refresh rate, an ultra-thin “Blade Bezel” screen frame and a UPC webcam (R.T. Under Panel Camera) hidden under the OLED screen panel.

While most of the laptop screens currently available in the market are based on the old LCD technology, more and more companies are starting to offer OLED versions for their laptops, such as the ASUS ZenBook Flip S laptop we reviewed. Samsung is now launching the next generation of OLED screens for laptops, including the 14-inch OLED panel that comes for the first time in the world with a high refresh frequency of 90Hz, compared to 60Hz today. According to the company’s tests, the new screens are considered and even better than 120Hz LCD screens.

Along with the new 90Hz versions, the company has introduced further improvements to its new OLED screens that will reach a lower thickness of 1mm and weigh up to 30% lower than competing screens, when they come with a new and ultra-thin frame that Samsung calls Blade Bezel, Bring their screen-to-body ratio to 93% without sacrificing the webcam, which the company incorporates under the OLED panel without the need for a dedicated “hole” in the screen.

The new 14-inch and 90Hz OLED panel is already in mass production and is expected to reach new mobile models starting in March 2021.

As a user who has gone out to test OLED mobiles in the past, there is no doubt that their display quality is much higher than any competing LCD panel. However, their main limitation for gamers was the low refresh rate, which the new screen panel is supposed to solve when it reaches 90Hz but actually shows parallel performance to a 120Hz LCD screen, according to the company statement.
