747 turbine blades span cars in the Netherlands

The Longtail Aviation Boeing 747-400, operating a Flt LGT-5504 from Maastricht in the Netherlands to New York has suffered an engine explosion, and turbine blades from the damaged engine were knocked down on cars in the small town of Meerssen.

According to the Aviation Herald, an elderly woman was “struck by debris and sustained minor injuries.”

The pilots called an emergency and went into traps to dump fuel and send it to Liege (Belgium) for safe landing about an hour after takeoff.

Several cars on the ground were damaged as a result of falling debris.

The Aviation Herald reports that a Meerssen resident said he heard “a loud bang, that he saw the plane with flaming flames from one of the engines on the right, then metal removed from the sky. ”
