Former policeman Masersha Wasa, who murdered his wife Angwatz Wasa, was sentenced at noon (Wednesday) to 29 years in prison. He shot her dead with a gun at their home in Netanya in October 2018.
“The defendant shot and killed the life of the murdered woman,” the judges of the Lod District Court wrote. “We have addressed the serious injury to the victims of the crime. There is no doubt that there is heavy damage to the children.” In addition, he was sentenced to 12 years probation and payment of NIS 250,000 in compensation for the children and sister of the murdered woman, who is raising several of them.

The sister of the murdered woman, Miriam Malkamo, came to the courtroom to hear the reading of the sentence. “I hope there will be a severe punishment, that the court will do justice to such situations and such murders, and that we will not know of any more such cases,” she said afterwards.
Attorney Hila Edelman of the Department of Police Investigations, who was part of the prosecution team, said they would consider whether to appeal the sentence and demand life imprisonment. “The court has given a severe sentence, but we will study the sentence and understand what remains to be done,” she said. “This is a serious case of murder of a woman by her partner, who left three small children orphaned, including a baby who was only two months old at the time of the murder. DIP has petitioned for life imprisonment and the maximum sentence that would reflect the severity of the case.”

Advocate Tami Kellenberg, the legal aid representative from the Ministry of Justice representing the victims of the crime, expressed satisfaction with the sentence. “The message that murder of women cannot continue. The court sentenced him to 29 years in prison. The family says it will not cure their pain, but they are happy that the court saw them. “The sentence was handed down by Lod District Court President Ruth Lorech and Justices Deborah Atar and Ami Kubo.

The killer in a police uniform
At 7.30pm that day he returned home, where his wife, their two-month-old baby daughter and two other children from a previous marriage were. At 9 p.m., as the children lay in their beds, an argument resurfaced between the couple, during which Wasa hit his wife in the face, took a lid of a pan that was in place, also hit her in the back and kicked her in the leg.
Angwatz Wasa previously worked at the Shapira and Rigler Schools in Netanya as an educational coordinator in a project to integrate members of the Ethiopian community in Israel, and assisted victims of domestic violence. The couple’s neighbors said after the murder that they never suspected the couple were in conflict.
