2021 elections: The Likud will not hold primaries ahead of the elections to the 24th Knesset

Compromise reached: The court of the Likud movement ruled today (Friday) that in the elections to the 24th Knesset, there will be no primaries for the composition of the party’s list.

Last Sunday, the court heard a special panel of five judges in four petitions against the non-existence of the primaries, when, among other things, the petitioners raised allegations that the decision was not approved by the Likud Center but approved by the secretariat, as well as allegations against the seats on the list.

In addition, the petitioners petitioned against the decision stating that the non-existence of the primaries will also apply to the elections to the 25th Knesset, if these take place less than a year after the elections to the 24th Knesset on March 23, 2021.

Today, the president of the Likud tribunal, Michael Kleiner, accepted the compromise proposal that no primaries will be held in the upcoming elections, and in addition, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will undertake to hold primaries in the run-up to the 25th Knesset elections.

At the same time, Netanyahu will undertake to demand in every coalition negotiation a Norwegian law that will guarantee seats for MKs from the top ten (seats after 30). This, only if the Likud receives less than 35 seats in the upcoming elections.

Earlier this month, a group of center members petitioned the movement’s tribunal against the decision not to hold primaries. Sources close to Netanyahu said that the prime minister was concerned about the possibility that the tribunal would overturn the decision of the Constitution Committee, in whole or in part, and that it was determined to cancel the primaries and the armor as a package deal.
